Lessons in Tanya – Lesson 28 – Chapter 12 Part 2 – The Beinoni

We continue from our previous lesson, learning more about the type of person known as the “Beinoni” – the “middleman” or the “average man”. We find it in more detail how he is so similar to a Tzadik, but he lacks the “full power” of the Tzadik in everything that he does.

He finds that even after sudden flames of favour of devote connection with Hashem, that there is a sudden drop. The animal soul / the evil inclination awakens in the left side of his heart and spurs him on to committing an evil deed in some way. But he ignores it and gets on with what counts – doing good.

What separates him from the Tzadik though is that while externally, it looks like he is working like the Tzadik, it is only because he has control over the garments of his soul. Essentially, he is still very much working with a soul that is not completely on the pure level of the Tzadik. So – he behaves like the Tzadik in every way – but essentially, his soul lacks something which would make him a Tzadik.
