If you own a smartphone, you’ll want to put some Jewish apps onto it. Below, I have listed some apps which I hope you will find useful. Some of these apps will allow you to study Torah on-the-go and having used them myself, I can really say that they are outstanding.
When travelling by bus or another vehicle when one is not the driver but finding oneself distracted by other things going on, use one of these apps to keep busy and spend time learning more about what the Torah is all about!
The apps are listed in alphabetical particular order, so please do not regard one to be any as a better choice than another.
Just go ahead to the Playstore and type in the name of the app, download it and get started using it right away!
- Brochos – a great app to help you with learning about the correct blessings to be recited on various foods. Also includes benchers for Ashkenaz and Sefard. You can even send in a request asking for help if you’re unsure about something!
- Daily Study (Chabad.org) – gives you access to the variety of daily learning schedules followed by Chabad Chassidim. This includes Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya, Hayom Yom, and Rambam. There is a wealth of material here to keep you going every day with both English translation and audio (and even video) Shiurim!
- Direction of Prayer – this app will point you in the right direction to pray wherever you find yourself. For those moving about often and on-the-go and don’t know which direction to face – use this app to find the exact direction to pray in (i.e. towards Israel, Jerusalem and the Kotel).
- HebDate – a great app that will keep you updated with the day of the month as well as a list of learning schedules you can follow. It also includes information for each day’s times (Dawn, Talis, Sunrise, Shacharit, Mincha, Maariv etc.)
- HeDict – a Hebrew and Aramaic dictionary (translating into Hebrew). For those whose Hebrew is good but who lack in studying a page of Talmud due to the Aramaic language, this is a great app to help!
- Hok LeIsrael – the well known work Chok LeYisrael available for study a portion of Chumash/Neviim/Ketuvim/Mishna/Talmud/Zohar and more every single day!
- InstaRabbi – a wonderful app that allows you access to practical questions asked by others all around the world and answers from a team of rabbis. The rabbis include sources helping direct everyone to the exact reasoning behind the Halachah. You can ask your own questions too – whether you wish the questions/answers to be private or public!
- Is it Kosher? – a neat app to help you find out if a particular product is kosher or not. Also has an “Ask Rabbi” facility.
- Jerusalem Compass – another app similar to the above “Direction of Prayer”
- Jewish Clock – a fascinating app to show how the Shaot Zmaniot are calculated. It shows the time according to the Halachic definition of an hour. You’ll need some instruction to understand what the means – so don’t be confused if you don’t understand what the time on the clock actually is! Please don’t use it if you need to be at your appointment on time!
- Kehati – the entire Kehati Mishnayot is available for you to learn on your smartphone! In addition, you can follow the entire English translation. There is also an audio option to hear the Mishnayot being recited together with the explanation in Hebrew. This is really great for a somewhat personal learning experience and being able to listen to someone pronounce the words clearly!
- Mezuzah Guide – a cute app that will allow you to understand where to place your Mezuzot in your home. By following the image on the screen, you can quite accurately place your Mezuzot in the correct position. If you’re stuck – you can also ask a rabbi (through the app) to help!
- Real Clear Daf – an outstanding app allowing you to follow the Daf Yomi clearly! It is just beautifully presented and if you are having a hard time finding the right Shiur for you – just log in to Real Clear Daf for a really clear explanation of each page – each day!
- Sefaria – www.sefaria.org is surely the most outstanding site available for learning Torah texts in the original. With translations and typing done by all (it is really open source), one is able to either learn from what others have already added, or add things oneself. The volume of material on the site is phenomenal and it is being updated all the time! There’s so much to learn here, including the Steinsaltz Talmud with translation – so there really is a lot to keep one on the go!
- Shabbat Times – just what it says
- Shabbos Zmanim – Similar to Shabbat times but also includes a variety of extra options such as setting an alarm to go off to remind you when it’s time to light!
- Tefillin – a neat app that will show you where you need to put your Tefillin on your head! A lot of people mistaken the place for placing their head Tefillin. This app gives you a mirror image so that you can see the exact location of where one’s Tefillin are to be placed!
- Tehillat Hashem – the Siddur for Chabad Chassidim – available with the basic prayers of the day
- Tfila Compass – okay – this is the third compass that will help you find the correct direction to dave. Try them all out and use the one you enjoy the most!
- Google Translate – a must app for anyone wanting to get fast translations of Hebrew words or wanting to translate from English to Hebrew (or of course any other language – just in case you’re not a linguist!)
- Ben Ish Chai – this is the entire text of the Halachic work written by Rabbi Yosef Chaim of Baghdad – the Ben Ish Chai. It is great to be able to carry this around with one to read any time!
- Tomer Devorah – an app that includes the entire text of the Tomer Devorah – the Palm Tree of Devorah written by the kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Cordevero (the RaMaK). There are also a host of other wonderful utilities included in the app – so check it out!
- For those in need of improving their Hebrew, I also recommend the outstanding website (not app) www.pealim.com
