Lessons in Tanya – Lesson 12 – Daat – Attachment – Chap 3 Part 5 / Garments of the Soul – Chap 4

We conclude chapter 3 with the concept of Daat. Though translated as knowledge, in the mystical sense, Daat is really the concept of attachment. We process knowledge through a three stage process.

We gather information (Chochmah). We begin to unravel and expand the concepts in Chochmah (Binah). This, however, is not sufficient. We need to become attached to the subject matter as much as the verse speaks about Adam “knowing” his wife Chavah. This concludes chapter 3.

We begin chapter 4 which takes us on a new journey. After having learned about the nature of the different types of souls (the Tzaddik, the Rasha and the Beinoni) and after having learned about the ten soul powers, we begin to learn about the three garments of the soul. These garments, namely thought, speech and action may be put on and taken off at will in order to express the soul through its ten soul powers. We are using the well-known “Lessons in Tanya” as a basis from which we read the material together (so you can follow along if you don’t have the book.)
