Chapter 16 of the Tanya leads us further into the goal of the Beinoni. The Beinoni must put in the effort necessary to rule over the left side of his heart where the animalistic / material desires constantly awaken him in that direction.
He will be able to do this by generating the feeling of fear in his mind to keep him away from the bad that he should refrain from and direct him to the good which he should pursue.
He’ll need to generate fear and love in his mind and then let this flow through to his heart. Even if he can’t manage to generate all of this through his contemplation, he can acquire the love towards God and the Mitzvot through a hidden love which he has.
