Mesilat Yesharim – The Path of the Just #17 – Chapter 2 – The Trait of Watchfulness

Lifesaver

We conclude Chapter 2 dealing with the trait of Watchfulness. Though we must do everything we can to save ourselves – to be careful of what we do, it is God who actually helps us to overcome our evil inclinations.

Let us not forget that no matter what we do to improve ourselves, it is only through God’s kindness that we can actually become better. When we are able to save ourselves from a dangerous situation, it is not because of our own effort. It is because God is there with us, helping us to overcome it.

Of course, if not for our own effort, God would not necessarily be there to rescue us. But when we do what we should – the right thing – then God stands by our side – so to speak, helping us to overcome the battle we have against everything evil and bad.

We make a start into Chapter 3 dealing with the different divisions of Watchfulness – something we will take off from in our future lesson. When it comes to Watchfulness, we must be aware of what is actual good so that we know what to do. But, we must also be aware when we take a look at the good that we do, if there is to be found anything bad in that. Two aspects of good. One – real good. Two – the good / bad within the good.
