In our fourth lesson in the holy work entitled Shaarei Kedushah written by Rabbi Chaim Vital (student of the Arizal) – we continue the theme of acquiring Ruach HaKodesh – Divine Inspiration.
Our first lesson in Shaarei Kedushah dealt with the introduction to this masterful work, but before beginning the work, we have jumped to Chapter 3 Section 8 in order to give the viewer the opportunity to see for himself/herself what lies in store for one who works through the other chapters systematically and with great diligence.
It’s a lifetime of effort of course – but the point is to get oneself onto the correct path. Rabbi Chaim Vital is advocating a path of purity for us where we must engage ourselves in the observance of Mitzvot (Torah commandments) and the study of Torah to the greatest degree possible.
In our lesson today – we look at two paragraphs from Chapter 3 of his work wherein he details some prerequisites before undertaking the journey to take one to a very deep mystical state of union (Deveikut) with God.
It’s impossible to discuss all these matters in a short description such as this – but let it suffice to say that our sensitivity to life and to others, as well as our purifying ourselves, are the best means to preparing ourselves in a healthy manner.
Here we will learn about observing the Mitzvot, loving Torah, loving our fellow and an insight into one of the neglected parts of Torah life – the commiserating with the Shechinah (the Divine Presence) which is in exile. We do this through the Tikkun Chatzot prayers reciting in the middle of the evening – every night. Thereafter, the early morning is to be spent in Torah study as we prepare for the next day and the morning prayers (Shacharit).
Please do join me on my own journey as we read this holy book together.
