Mesillat Yesharim – The Path of the Just #13 – Chapter 1 – Man’s Obligation in the World

The Ramchal teaches us that we must be very precise in the way which we observe the Mitzvot. Even the smallest change can make such a big difference to our lives (in whichever direction we go.) We should learn from those who weigh out gold and pearls at how exacting they are and that the smallest change (or error) can make a huge difference in their lives.

Mesillat Yesharim – The Path of the Just – Chapter 1 – Lesson 12 – Man’s Obligation in the World

The study of Mussar is by no means quick learning. Even though we are twelve lessons into our learning – we are still on Chapter 1! We are talking about Man’s obligation in the world – his duty in the world.

Mesillat Yesharim – The Path of the Just – Introduction Part 6 – Lesson 6

Valley and Long Road

We (finally) conclude the introduction of the Mesillat Yesharim. The Ramchal has taught us the path and steps required to grow as a human being. Practically speaking, he has taught us how to grow into an angel – though clothed in a physical body!

Stairs

Those who can find time for studying so many things in life should surely be able to find the time to study the teachings of Mussar. In these teachings, one learns to grow as a human being. One cannot find these teachings in science and mathematics and other such similar subjects (though there is nothing wrong with learning these subjects. In fact they may well come to even aid one in one’s Torah growth too.)

Love

The Ramchal continues to teach us that it is not just fear that is important – in other words to fear God, but rather, we must also learn what love is i.e. to love God. Mesillat Yesharim – The Path of the Just – Introduction Part 2 – Lesson 2

Path

The Ramchal takes his introduction further by telling us some golden nuggets about the study of Mussar.

While it seems that only those of low intelligence will end up studying it – because its not exactly the type of study that deals with intricate laws and debates etc. this will be a loss for all of us. If those who cannot learn, study this study, they will not gain what they need to. Likewise those who have the ability who don’t study it will also cause a loss to everyone, including themselves.

Path

The Mesillat Yesharim was written by the outstanding sage Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1746). This is his masterpiece work which teaches us not just Mussar (ethical morals) but also ways in which to sanctify ourselves so that we can become closer to the Creator. In fact, if we follow his steps carefully enough, we can even reach the level of acquiring Ruach HaKodesh (Divine Inspiration)!
